IND-W vs IRE-W: Cricket Ireland backs Aimee Maguire after spinner gets reported for ‘suspect bowling action’
Ireland’s cricket association came out in full support of spinner Aimee Maguire after the player was reported for ‘suspect bowling action’ after the first One Day International between host India and the Irish side in Rajkot.
“The staff and players are rallying around Aimee, reassuring her that she will return with a stronger action and will continue to shine on the international stage for many years to come,” said Graeme West, Director of High Performance at Cricket Ireland, as a response to the report lodged by the match officials after the ODI.
The 18-year-old left-arm offie took three scalps- of Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, and Jemimah Rodrigues – in the match which Ireland went on to lose by six wickets.
“Maguire’s bowling action will now be tested under the ICC process relating to suspected illegal bowling actions reported in Tests, ODIs and T20Is. She is permitted to continue bowling in international cricket until the results of the testing are known,” the International Cricket Council said in a statement.
The ICC defines an illegal bowling action when a player “is throwing rather than bowling the ball”. “…where the player’s elbow extends by an amount of more than 15 degrees between their arm reaching the horizontal and the ball being released.”
She will have to go under testing at an ICC Accredited Testing Centre. If the results show that the youngster was using an illegal action then she will be suspended until she modifies it and subsequently undergoes another test with the ICC.
As mentioned above, she will be allowed to play international cricket until the results are out.
