Devajit Saikia takes charge as BCCI Secretary; Prabhtej Singh begins role of treasurer

Devajit Saikia and Prabhtej Singh formally took charge as the secretary and the treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) respectively, on Sunday.

With Jay Shah moving on to the International Cricket Council as its chairman and Ashish Shelar joining the Maharashtra government as a cabinet minister, the two positions were lying vacant since December.

Saikia, who was previously the joint secretary of the Board, was elected unopposed for the new role along with Bhatia, also an apex council member.

Contrary to reports, Shah did not attend the meeting as a special invitee. He came towards the end and greeted the new office-bearers.

With Saikia taking over, he will be representing the BCCI in the ICC. However, it needs to be seen whether the BCCI conducts another election to fill in the position of joint secretary.

Saikia, a seasoned administrator, is also a former first-class cricketer. He featured in four games for Assam between 1990 and 1991 as a wicketkeeper, scoring 53 runs and effecting nine dismissals.

Later, Saikia pursued a legal career, starting as a lawyer at the Gauhati High Court at the age of 28 and he is currently the advocate general of Assam.
