‘Focus is completely Champions Trophy,’ says Ajit Agarkar as discussion regarding transition phase takes backseat
When India’s think-tank met the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials for a review meeting last week, opinions were sought in terms of how to handle the transition period in a phased manner.
However, while announcing the squad for the Champions Trophy on Saturday, Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the selection committee, made it clear that discussions regarding the transition phase would only be held once the ICC event ends in March.
“It’s a month away from the Champions Trophy. These guys have been exceptional performers in one-day cricket. Unfortunately, we haven’t had too much one-day cricket this year. We’ll see once the Champions Trophy is done. We’ve got a bit more time to sit and assess where everyone is at. It’s not just about one or two players, but where we go forward,” Agarkar said.
India only played three ODIs in 2024, and went on to lose the series 0-2. However, before heading to Dubai for the Champions Trophy, India will be engaged in a three-match ODI series at home against England, next month.
“At the moment, the focus is on one-day cricket and Champions trophy. We reached the World Cup final that we played last time (in 2023). We know the quality that these guys bring and the experience that these guys bring. At the moment, with regards to any player in the team, the focus is completely Champions Trophy,” the chairman of the selection committee stated.
