Exploring Director Bala’s Fascination with Violence in His Films
Actor Arun Vijay’s latest movie “Vanangaan” has been released in theaters. The film’s ‘Thank You Meet’ was held yesterday. During the event, Arun Vijay expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am incredibly happy. ‘Vanangaan’ is a milestone in my career, and I thank director Bala for trusting me and giving me the opportunity to be part of such a unique film. He gave me the confidence that a role without dialogues could make a deep impact on the audience. The appreciation I am receiving today is entirely due to him.
He further noted the challenges and the guidance provided by Bala, stating, “Learning sign language, altering my body language, and immersing myself into the character were possible only because of Bala Sir’s guidance. I wonder if I will ever have the chance to act in such a movie again because only Bala Sir can create such a masterpiece.”
Director Bala, speaking about the movie, said, “Violence runs deep in my veins. While many recent films focus on regions like Tirunelveli, Madurai, Coimbatore, and Chennai, I chose Kanyakumari as the backdrop for this film. The movie runs for 2 hours and 5 minutes, and the second half progresses swiftly, making it feel like a short film. It’s based on a real incident that happened in Chennai. In an era where filmmakers rely heavily on dialogues to convey the story, this movie is an attempt to narrate without words. I hope society imposes even stricter punishments than depicted in this film for offenders.”
He added, “I won’t make films about criminal legacies. My goal is to showcase the world of differently-abled individuals. We should not observe them with pity and turn away. They live among us and depend on us. It is our responsibility to portray their lives authentically.”
