Women’s Hockey India League 2024-25: Sonam brace helps Soorma Hockey Club blow away Delhi SG Pipers

The calm before Monday’s storm lasted only nine minutes. The Delhi SG Pipers were then blown away like a tin roof in the wind, succumbing to a 5-1 defeat against JSW Soorma Hockey Club during a Women’s Hockey India League match at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Stadium here.

The Pipers were reduced to a shadow of themselves from Friday’s reverse fixture, in which they had managed to pull the rug under Soorma’s feet with a 2-0 win.

Charlotte Englebert drew first blood with an angry swipe into the bottom of the net with Maria Verschoor putting in the hard yards before linking up with the Belgian on the left.

Lightning struck twice as Sonam registered a brace to stun the Pipers into silence. The first of her goals came amid a goalmouth melee when she managed to sneak the ball past Bichu Devi Kharibam despite the goalkeeper’s best efforts.

A minute later, the Pipers were left to rue another error when a failed interception from Manisha saw Charlotte Stapenhorst win possession, wriggle her way out of traffic, and coolly lob the ball into Sonam’s path for a tap-in.

Later, Stapenhorst got one for herself, dinking the ball over a clueless Elodie Picard.

The Pipers tried to hold onto the ball for as long as possible, even though Soorma showed no signs of relenting. But Sangita Kumari managed to pull one back for her side in a one-on-one encounter with Savita.

The Pipers even subbed off its goalkeeper with seven minutes to go. But unknowingly, they ended up playing into their opponent’s hands, which signed off in style as Penny Squibb put the game to bed from a penalty corner.
