Veteran decathlon athlete Jai Prakash Singh was awarded the ‘Unsung Hero’ award at the Sportstar Focus Bihar Conclave 2025 held in the city on Friday.
The 71-year-old athlete from Ramgarh, Kaimur represented India at the 1982 Delhi Asian Games. Between 1977 and 1984, he amassed an impressive collection of medals in the open national games, winning three gold and four silver medals.
One of his biggest highlights was breaking the decathlon meet record at the All India Inter University Athletic Championship in 1976. He was honoured as the Best Athlete of the tournament for his effort.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Jai Prakash Singh’s career is his simultaneous success in academics and athletics. He not only secured the first rank in his MCom degree but also won a gold medal in the open national athletics decathlon event during the same period.
