Bad Girl Ramani is flawed – Director Varsha Bharath
Bad Girl starring Anjali Sivaraman in the lead is an upcoming Tamil movie produced by director Vetrimaaran’s Grass Root Film Company. Interestingly, Bad Girl is a film by a big female crew including writer-director Varsha Bharath, cinematographer Preetha Jayarama (who alongside Jagadeesh Ravi, Prince Anderson has handled the camera), editor Radha Sridhar, costume designer Shruthi Manjari, makeup artist Paavana Mohan, among others.
Bad Girl teaser released for the mainstream film audience on January 26, 2025 invoking a wide range of complaints. Draupathi (2020) director Mohan G slammed Vetrimaaran for producing a film that promotes ‘Brahmin bashing’. Anjali Sivaraman plays a character named Ramani in Bad Girl, and she is shown as a non-purist leading to this tweet from Mohan G:
Bad Girl‘s trailer which was released on December 17, 2024 as part of its International Film Festival of Rotterdam selection, has amassed YouTube comments that complain of promoting ‘the wrong route’ using a woman lead. Bad Girl director Varsha Bharath addressed some of these complaints at the teaser launch of the movie.

The filmmaker said, “I am not telling anybody how to lead their lives. This character Ramani played by Anjali Sivaraman is not a hero. She is just a really flawed person. She has mental health issues. She is just trying to survive. Generally itself, I don’t think filmmakers are people who can tell you how to live.”
Stating that she has seen male hero characters that are a ‘thousand times more irredeemable and flawed’, director Varsha Bharath added, “‘Bad Girl’ Ramani need not be hero-worshipped but can be accepted. I am not endorsing that women should drink in this film. I am just telling the story of a girl..Women don’t have to be purists. They only need to be human.”
A coming-of-age comedy drama, Bad Girl also stars Shanthi Priya, Saranya Ravichandran, Hridhu Haroon, TeeJay Arunasalam, Sashank Bommireddipalli, among others. Anurag Kashyap is co-presenting the movie with Vetrimaaran. Bad Girl has music by Amit Trivedi.
