Three new cases of suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome reported in Pune

Three fresh cases of suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) came to light in Pune district of Maharashtra on Thursday (January 30, 2025), according to Health Department data.

According to the data of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme by the Public Health Department, 130 suspected cases and two suspected deaths of GBS have been found in the State. Among the 130 patients, 20 are on ventilator. The three new cases reported are from previous days.

The second death was reported on Wednesday when a woman died at Pune’s Sassoon General Hospital. She was admitted to a local hospital on January 15 on the complaint of weakness. The first death was recorded on January 25 in Solapur district, where a Pune-based 40-year-old Chartered Accountant died, and the cause is suspected to be GBS. 

Among 130 patients, 73 are diagnosed as confirmed GBS cases. 25 patients are from Pune MC, 74 are from newly added villages in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) area, 13 are from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), nine are from Pune Rural, and nine are from other districts.

More water samples were sent for chemical and biological analysis to the Public Health Laboratory. 154 water samples were sent to the lab, among which samples from eight water sources were found to be contaminated.

A State-level rapid response team for house-to-house surveillance activities surveyed 37,803 houses in PMC, 9,069 houses in PCMC and 11,373 houses in Pune rural areas.
