ISL 2024-25: With playoffs confirmation in sight, Mohun Bagan hosts Punjab FC

Mohun Bagan Super Giant will be looking to accumulate more points and cement its place on top of the standings when it hosts Punjab FC in an Indian Super League fixture at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday.

Having won their last eight outings at home, the Mariners will be eager to continue the trend against an opponent playing just its second season in the competition.

Mohun Bagan also recorded six clean sheets during this period giving it the opportunity to equal the longest stretch of home victories, which currently belongs to FC Goa (recorded between December 2019 and November 2022).

Given its recent form, Mohun Bagan is tipped as the home favourite despite the fact that it will be missing some key players owing to suspension and injury. With 43 points from 19 matches, Mohun Bagan is enjoying a nine point lead at the top over its nearest challenger in Jamshedpur FC, which is on 34 points but has played a match less.

With five more rounds to go, Mohun Bagan will be looking to secure the necessary points to retain the League Shield that it had won last season. Having beaten Punjab FC 3-1 while visiting it in the first leg, it will be added motivation for Mohun Bagan to complete a league double against this Shers.

Even if it manages to draw the game, Mohun Bagan will become the first team to qualify for the playoffs. Punjab FC is currently placed ninth in the table with 23 points from 17 matches and will be looking to garner more points to brighten its possibility of making it to the playoffs.
