IND vs ENG Pitch Report, 1st ODI at Nagpur: Ground conditions, stats, records and toss factor at VCA Stadium

India and England will face off in the first of three One-Day Internationals at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on Thursday.

This will be the first ODI to be held at the venue since 2019, when India eked out a narrow eight-run win against the mighty Aussies, successfully defending a 250-run total.

India has played six ODIs at the VCA Stadium, winning four of them while losing two. Interestingly, all four of its ODI wins at this venue have come against Australia, while it has faced defeat against Sri Lanka and South Africa.

The ground has witnessed some run-fests, with the 300-run mark being breached in six out of 18 completed innings. However, the last two ODIs here were low scoring affairs, with the team batting first posting totals of 242 and 250.

Even though the Nagpur pitch has overwhelmingly aided spin bowling in red-ball cricket, conditions have been largely balanced in the white-ball format. While the seamers have picked up 69 wickets at an average of 39.10 and an economy rate of 5.86, the corresponding numbers for spinners are similar (53 wickets, average: 39.41, economy rate: 5.33).

The toss hasn’t played a major role in determining the winner in ODIs at the venue. The team winning the toss has gone on to win the match only three times in nine matches. Teams have won the toss and elected to bat on five occasions, resulting in only a solitary win. Meanwhile, teams that have opted to chase have won two out of four games.
