Jos Buttler on ODIs: If the best players play against each other, it will always be exciting
For Jos Buttler, ODIs remain one of the favourite formats despite growing concerns over its sustainability.
Ahead of England’s three-match series-opener against India, Buttler said, “It’s always been one of my favourite formats. It’s certainly been pushed a little bit towards the margins in recent years and the way scheduling is and obviously the rise of T20 and franchise cricket. I still believe if you talk to guys about winning the World Cup, they’d probably say a 50-over World Cup ahead of a T20 World Cup at the moment…”
“Whether that continues to be the case moving forward, I don’t know. But the schedules are always the thing. If you can get the best players on the park playing against each other in whatever format, I think people are always going to be excited to watch it…”
In October last year, the ICC’s Cricket Committee came up with suggestions to boost the Test and ODI formats. A section of the experts feel that the ODI format has been losing relevance outside the ICC events. To make the format interesting, the Cricket Committee decided to limit the use of two new balls in the first 25 overs of the innings, after which only one ball will be used.
