World Champion Gukesh loses to Magnus Carlsen in Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour
Classical World Champion D. Gukesh lost to World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the last round of the round-robin stage at the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam tour on Sunday.
Played at the Weissenhaus Luxury resort in Hamburg, Gukesh was outplayed by the Norwegian maestro who was playing with the dark pieces.
Gukesh finished in the top eight to qualify for the knockout stage.
French Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja and Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan topped the table with 6.5 points out of a possible nine in the round-robin rapid format, which allowed ten minutes for each player, plus a ten-second increment.
Gukesh drew seven and lost two rounds — against Carlsen and Firoujza — to finish with 3.5/9 points in eighth place.
The bottom two finishers, Slovenia’s Vladimir Fedoseev and USA’s Levon Aronian, will now play for the ninth spot.
