Suriya’s ‘Retro’ Roars at Box Office with Record-Breaking Opening

Suriya‘s much-awaited gangster drama ‘Retro’, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, has made a strong impact at the box office, registering the actor’s career-best opening in Tamil Nadu. Released on May 1, 2025, the film collected an impressive ₹17.25 crore in Tamil Nadu alone on its first day.

Across India, the film’s net collection stood at ₹19.25 crore, with the Tamil version contributing the majority. The Telugu version added ₹1.95 crore, while the Hindi version brought in ₹5 lakhs. Including taxes, the total Day 1 gross is estimated at ₹22.71 crore.

The film also recorded a high occupancy rate of 78.89% in Tamil Nadu, with major cities like Chennai (87.25%), Coimbatore (85.50%), and Madurai (79.25%) seeing nearly packed shows, especially during the afternoon and evening slots.

Thanks to the May Day holiday and strong pre-release buzz, ‘Retro’ outperformed other releases and emerged as the top choice for moviegoers. It now ranks among the top three Tamil openers of 2025, only behind ‘Good Bad Ugly’ and ‘Vidaamuyarchi’.

The film has also surpassed the opening of Suriya’s previous hit, ‘Kanguva’, marking a strong comeback for the star.

‘Retro’ is set in the 1990s and follows the story of a reformed gangster, played by Suriya. It blends romance and action, and features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, and Prakash Raj.

Though the film has received mixed early reviews, its massive Day 1 performance sets high expectations for the weekend. If the momentum continues, ‘Retro’ could become one of the biggest hits of Suriya’s career.
