BWF Asia Mixed Team Championships 2025: India loses to South Korea in last group-stage match, to face Japan in quarterfinals

India lost 2-3 to South Korea in a Group D fixture in the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships 2025 at the Qingdao Conson Sports Centre in China on Thursday.

Despite losing, India finished second in the group, enough to help the team qualify for the quarterfinals. This defeat comes a day after India’s dominant 5-0 win over Macau, China.

The Koreans took a 2-0 lead in the tie after mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto fell to Ju Dong Ki and Eun Na Jeong 21-11, 12-21, 15-21 and Malvika Bansod conceded a 27-minute defeat in straight games to Jin Yu Sim.

India’s comeback was was triggered by Sathish Karunakaran’s gritty 17-21, 21-18, 21-19 win over Geonyeop Cho. The scales were balanced after Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand – who like Sathish were a game down in their respective matches – beat Ji Min Kim and Jung Yu Kim 19-21, 21-16, 21-11.

The responsibility of taking India over the line fell on men’s doubles pair of MR Arjun and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy when the tie was poised at 2-2.

However Yong Jin and Seung Sung Na were too good for the Indian duo. Despite some resistance from Arjun and Satwik in the second game, the Korean pair wrapped up the tie for its side with a 21-14, 25-23 win.

India will play Japan in the quarterfinals and the winner of the contest will be assured of at least a bronze medal.
