SA vs AFG HIGHLIGHTS, Champions Trophy 2025: South Africa beats Afghanistan by 107 runs

OUT! Rahmat is caught behind on 90 off 92 balls. Rabada gets the final wicket to end with 2/36.

SIX! Rahmat rocks back on this bouncer from Mulder and hooks this over fine leg. WICKET! Mulder flattens the off stump as Noor misses the line trying to defend.

Wiaan Mulder back into the attack. Four singles in his over.

Edged and FOUR! Noor Ahmed jabs outside off against Rabada and gets the edge past the wicketkeeper.

Rahmat with a pull shot against Ngidi for FOUR!

He then gets a hat-trick of boundaries against Maharaj. The first is through square leg with a sweep, then inside out over covers and the final one is cut away behind square.

Maharaj ends Rashid’s cameo. Another attempt at a full-bladed slog, but he gets this off the inside edge and holes out at mid wicket. A reward for Maharaj too for his effort today.

Rashid Khan c Markram b Maharaj 18(13)

Rahmat joins the party now. He picks the length early, shuffles towards leg to get in line and loft this over mid wicket for FOUR. Seven runs from the over.

Rashid takes on Maharaj. FOUR through covers before sweeping the next to the deep square leg fence. Rickelton misses a stumping chance. Rashid steps out for an expansive slog down the ground, misses it but so does the keeper.

Lungi Ngidi into the attack now. OUT! Naib is caught at mid off.

Gulbadin Naib c Bavuma b Ngidi 13(19)

Rashid Khan off the mark with an upper-cut SIX! Rashid heaves the final delivery over mid on for FOUR!

An lbw appeal against Naib. Not a lot of interest but Bavuma goes up for review. The ball tracker shows this going down leg. Rahmat completes his FIFTY with a clip past mid on.

Maharaj not giving an inch to the Afghan batters to work. Just two singles from the over.

Just a single from Maharaj’s over.

Two FOURs in Jansen’s over. Naib first nudges the fourth delivery through fine leg. He then swats the final delivery over mid on. 13 off the over.

Marco Jansen back into the attack. WICKET! Nabi botches up his pull, hands a top edge to short midwicket. The change works again for South Africa.

Mohammad Nabi c Rabada b Jansen 8(17)

Another economical over from Maharaj. Just three singles. An lbw appeal against Nabi who tried to work this through the on side; drifting down leg.

Rabada to Rahmat, FOUR! Another bouncer from Rabada but Rahmat is quick in getting the hook out, gets an edge past the keeper. Rahmat clips the fourth off his pads and runs two. Three more singles in the over makes it nine runs off it.

Rahmat and Nabi continue to milk the field and pick runs. Five from this Maharaj over.

Rabada to Nabi. No Ball! A free hit coming for Afghanistan. Rabada bowls this wide of off and Rahmat cannot connect with it. A bye off the next delivery as Rickelton cannot collect this slower delivery. Nabi picks a single and makes it four from the over.

Mohammad Nabi is the new batter.

Maharaj again. FOUR for Rahmat. He gets himself in place on his backfoot and cuts this past the point region. Six runs from the over.

Rabada back to bowl the next. Rahmat punches the first delivery through backward point for two. He guides the next to third man again for two runs. WICKET! Azmat is stangled down leg. This back-of-a-length delivery is banged in and jumps onto his ribs. He tries to fend it away to fine leg but can only get a glove to the keeper.

Azmatullah Omarzai c Rickelton b Rabada 18(27)

Keshav Maharaj comes into the attack. There’s an lbw appeal against Azmat as he misses the line on his straight drive but there’s an inside edge on that which saves him. Just two singles off it.

FOUR! Rahmat sees a length ball from Mulder and swipes it over mid on. Three more singles make it seven off the over. That’s the minimum Afghanistan should be aiming for now.

No spin yet from South Africa. Seamers have done well to put pressure on the batters. Azmat and Rahmat have done well to keep the scoreboard moving so far after the collapse.

Afghanistan needs a long partnership here to get back into the game. Rahmat and Azmat have found odd boundaries but it’s a long chase and South Africa isn’t allowing easy runs.

Ngidi is back. Azmatullah cracks a drive towards extra for four. Afghanistan needs plenty of those.

Mulder. OUT!! Hashmatullah Shahidi, the new batter, smacks the ball straight to mid on. Afghanistan in crumbling here. Four down. Another good over for South Africa.

Runs have dried up for Afghanistan. Rabada is bowling a fine spell. There’s a run out appeal against Sediq. It was a quick single and Sediq put in a desperate dive but found himself short of the crease by inches. Afghanistan is three down now.

Wiaan Mulder into the attack. A good over to begin with for him. Just four runs off it.

Afghanistan unable to get a move on. South Africa has bowled really well to keep the run scoring in check. SIX! Finally Zadran times his slog and launches the ball over long on. OUT! Next ball Zadran is bowled. Length ball and Zadran was nowhere near the line of the ball. Middle stump is uprooted.

Kagiso Rabada into the attack. Zadran looking to cut lose but isn’t able to find gaps. Just two runs in that over.

Jansen. Terrific bowling by the left-armer. Keeping Sediq on the backfoot and challenging the outside edge. A maiden over.

Ngidi. Now Zadran punches the ball towards cover point and gets a four. Brilliant timing on that occasion. Ngidi comes back well in the next four deliveries.

Jansen. Atal gets his first boundary with a cracking pull wide of mid on. Afghanistan adds six runs from that over.

Runs aren’t coming at good pace. OUT! Gurbaz is gone. He tried to pull Ngidi but didn’t have enough space and ended up hitting it towards short fine leg. Big wicket for South Africa.

Sediqullah Atal gets off the mark with a single.

Lungi Ngidi to bowl from the other end. Zadran flicks the ball in the air towards square leg and gets three runs.

Jansen to Gurbaz, starts with leaving a delivery outside off. A bit of a break in the match as Gurbaz gets treatment after being struck on his back thigh. He manages to pick a single off that delivery but sinks to his knees after completing the run. Zadran off the mark with a quick single to mid off.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran open the innings. Marco Jansen with the new ball.

Farooqi to bowl the final over. Wiaan Mulder ends with 10 runs off the final two deliveries. The penultimate delivery is sliced through cover-point for FOUR. The final is an attempted bouncer which angles down leg, Mulder turns and pummels it over the fine leg fence for SIX. 14 runs off the final over.

WICKET! Omarzai crashes a length delivery into Marco Jansen’s leg stump. Jansen should have hit this to be fair but his attempted slog just does not catch the line. A gem of an over which gives away just three runs. Fifty for Markram in the over off just 33 deliveries.

Farooqi again. Back-to-back FOURS over covers for Markram. He relies on clearing the cover fielder and picking the gap in the deep. FOUR again! This one comes from over mid off on a full toss. WICKET! Miller tries to clear the cover boundary, he manages to hit it wide of the fielder too but Rahmat Shah dives across to grab that.

David Miller c Rahmat b Farooqi 14(18)

Noor for his ninth over. FOUR! Markram makes room and chips this over covers. SIX! Markram whacks this over midwicket. That’s 12 from the over.

FOUR! A full toss from Farooqi which Markram slices over covers. Four singles through the over make eight runs from it.

Miller picks his first boundary with a short-arm jab against Naib, races through the gap between long on and midwicket.

Six runs from Noor’s over, all run between the wickets and a wide.

WICKET! Finally some respite for Noor. Rassie tries to heave this through the on side again but gets a leading edge to point.

Rassie van der Dussen c Shahidi b Noor 52(46)

David Miller in next. He gets off the mark with a single through mid wicket. Six runs off the over.

SIX for Rassie! Another slog sweep over midwicket against Rashid. He also gets to his FIFTY with that shot. Seven runs from that over.

SA continues its attack. Rassie with a sweep past square leg for FOUR against Noor. The boundary is sandwiched between two doubles, one through point and the other through covers.

FOUR! Rassie slashes off Rashid and gets it between point and third man. A SIX to close the over as Rassie slog sweeps this over the mid wicket fence.

A missed run out in Nabi’s over. Aiden Markram was short of his crease at the non-striker’s end but Nabi fumbles the ball when collecting the throw.

Another triple in Rashid’s next over which gives away eight runs.

RUN OUT! Superb work from Rashid to get rid of Rickelton. The batter steps out and taps back towards the bowler. Rashid collects and throws it to the keeper in a flash. Rickelton puts in a dive but the shoulder of his bat sticks into the ground leaving the toe end hanging in the air over the crease. A timely wicket for Afghanistan.

Ryan Rickelton run out (Rashid) 103(106)

Rickelton with a soft push towards long off against Nabi to complete his maiden ODI century. He gets it off just 101 deliveries. Seven runs in the over.

Four singles from Nabi’s over.

Rashid back into the attack. Another four from this over. Rickelton moves to 99 with a signle through long off.

FOUR! Rassie drives down the ground against Nabi, the mid off fielder does well to cover cover ground but eventually cannot cut if off with his feet, allows a boundary. Seven from the over.

Noor struggling with his lines here. He bowls two wides to Rickelton. The left-right combo not making it any easier for him, though. Seven runs from the over.

Noor gives away 12 runs in this. There’s a wayward wide down the leg which Gurbaz cannot get to. Rassie gets a boundary with a cheeky late cut past the backward point fielder.

Bavuma has been given leg before off Nabi. He tried to ramp sweep this delivery from the middle-stump line but misses the shot. He calls for a DRS. The ball tracker shows the ball going down the leg stump and the decision is overturned.

WICKET! Bavuma’s reprieve lasts one delivery. He pulls this short length delivery but picks the fielder at deep mid wicket.

Temba Bavuma c Atal b Nabi 58(76)

Rassie van der Dussen in at No. 4.

Bavuma and Rickelton keep chipping away by picking the gaps against Noor Ahmed. Three for Rickelton through extra covers in this over which gets SA seven runs.

Expensive over from Naib. Rickelton pulls over mid wicket for the first FOUR! The second comes from Bavuma’s blade as he pulls behind square.

Fifty up for Bavuma in 63 deliveries. Five runs from Noor Ahmed’s over before another four come from Naib’s fifth.

100-run partnership between Rickelton and Bavuma. The two have laid a very good platform for South Africa. Bavuma is also nearing his half-century.

Rashid. An injury scare for Rashid as the ball hits him on his wrist. He looks in pain. After brief break, he’s back bowling. Rickelton hits him for four towards fine leg.

South Africa hasn’t taken a lot of risk in the first 20 overs. Runs are coming but not more than three or four.

Only one over for Rashid as Gulbadin Naib replaces him. Good first over by him, three runs off it.

Rashid Khan into the attack. Bavuma and Rickelton continue to rotate the strike and keep the scoreboard moving.

Pitch seems to have eased out a bit. Both Rickelton and Bavuma are finding boundaries now. Fifty for Rickelton! He has paced his innings very well so far.

Omarzai. Short ball to Bavuma and he pulls it towards square leg for four! Great shot. Runs have started to come for SA.

Nabi. Paddle sweep by Bavuma gets another four for South Africa. A mishit by Rickelton, ball goes high in the air but falls in the gap between long on and deep midwicket. 10 runs in the over.

Omarzai is back. Rickelton pulls towards fine leg but the ball falls short of the fielder. Five runs came in that over.

Nabi bowls a wonderful over to end the PowerPlay. Just one run from the over.

Farooqi. Rickelton comes down the track and lofts the slower delivery over mid on for SIX! Eight runs came in that over.

Nabi. South African batters have managed to rotate the strike well in this over. Six runs in that over.

Farooqi. Terrific over. They have set attacking fields as well to put pressure on the batters.

Mohamad Nabi into the attack. OUT! First ball wicket for Nabi as Zorzi hits the ball straight to mid on. He goes for 11.

Temba Bavuma in at three. Bavuma is off the mark with a quick single. Successful over for Afghanistan.

Farooqi. South African openers are now looking to up the ante. Two back-to-back fours by Rickelton. First a pull and then a cut past point.

Omarzai. Zorzi gets a half volley and drives the ball over the cover fielder for four. Two boundaries in that over. One towards mid on and then towards covers.

Farooqi. A slow start for South Africa.

Azmatullah Omarzai. He’s getting good shape with the new ball. Conditions are also slightly overcast. Just one run in that over.

Fazalhaq Farooqi with the new ball. Ryan Rickelton drives past mid off and gets South Africa underway with a four. A good over though by Farooqi.

The teams are out in the middle. We are done with national anthems.

Some greenery on this surface. There’s some colour, there are some cracks and then it’s hard. There might be some sideways movement. The cracks are in the 6-8m area. The South African seamers will be licking their lips looking at this. It may be a bowling surface, reckon Ian Bishop and Dale Steyn.
