ISL 2024-25: How can Mohun Bagan win the Indian Super League shield even before its match against Odisha FC?
Defending League Shield champion Mohun Bagan Super Giant can retain its title without even kicking off its next Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 fixture against Odisha FC at Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.
The Kolkata club currently tops the points table with 49 points from 21 matches, having registered 15 wins, four draws, and two losses.
Jose Molina’s men have three games remaining in the league and hold a 10-point lead over their closest challenger, FC Goa, which has played one game fewer.
Goa will face Kerala Blasters FC at home on Saturday. The Manolo Marquez-led side has 39 points from 20 matches so far and must win all four of its remaining fixtures to surpass MBSG’s current tally of 49.
If FCG fails to beat KBFC on Saturday, it will no longer be able to overtake Mohun Bagan SG, as even three consecutive wins thereafter would take its total to just 48 points.
This means Mohun Bagan SG will secure the League Shield title if FC Goa does not defeat Kerala Blasters at Fatorda Stadium on Saturday, even before playing its own match against Odisha FC on Sunday.
