Saurav Ghosal, back from retirement, reaches final of PSA Challenger Tour event in Sydney
In his first tournament since coming out retirement, Indian squash star Saurav Ghosal reached the final of the Octane Sydney Classic on Saturday.
Former World No. 10 Ghosal retired from the PSA (Professional Squash Association) Tour in April last year but at the same time, he had said that he still wanted to represent India. On January 1, he again became a member of the PSA Tour to keep his aspirations of playing for country alive.
The 38-year-old Ghosal, seeded second at the PSA Challenger Tour (second-tier of professional circuit) event, defeated World No. 141 Rhys Dowling of Australia 3-1 (11-9, 5-11, 11-1, 11-2) in the semifinals. The Indian had earlier beaten Malta’s Kijan Sultana 3-0 (11-8, 11-2, 11-8) in the second round before his 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-5) win over Korea’s Minwoo Lee in the quarterfinals. He was awarded a bye in the opening round.
Ghosal, who has won a total of 12 medals across categories at the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, takes on Egypt’s Abdelrahman Nassar in the final on Sunday.
