Boris Spassky passes away: Chess world pays tribute to former world champion

Soviet chess legend Boris Spassky has passed away at 88, the Russian Chess Federation announced on Thursday.

Spassky is best known for the iconic 1972 “Match of the Century” against Bobby Fischer in the height of the Cold War.

Following the news of his passing, members of the chess community poured in condolences and paid tribute to the former world champion.
