Kohli gets a leading edge to Glenn Maxwell at the short mid off. He has to dive to his right and that makes it too difficult for him. But you expect that to be taken by a fielder of Maxwell’s class.

Maxwell again. A couple of singles to start the over and both batters have settled into a good rhythm against spin. Scooped behind the keeper by Shreyas for a couple more. Seven runs from the over.

But there is an overthrow as the ball hits the stumps directly and trickles to square-leg and the batters will come back for a second. Beaten! Ellis again. Very wide outside off and an extra run for India. Punched through cover-point by Rohit with high elbows and a single for him. Kohli faces his first ball. A bit of a leading edge and he collects a single through cover-point. Whipped through midwicket by Rohit for one more. Wide outside off and driven through cover by Kohli for a single. FOUR! Rohit steps out and drills this down the ground for a boundary. Umpire did well go scramble for shelter and get out of the way.
Dwarshuis will continue. Wide ball down leg-side and a good take by Inglis behind the stumps. FOUR! Gill steps out and pulls this flat through midwicket for a boundary. Dropped in front of point by Gill for a quick single. FOUR! Rohit goes for an audacious sweep and the ball runs away to the boundary via an inside edge. Lucky runs for the captain.
OUT! Gill chops on! He was looking to run this down to third-man but got an inside edge onto his stumps. Virat Kohli comes in and a huge roar from the crowd.

Ellis continues. Ellis beats Rohit with a jaffa to make it four dot balls in a row this over. Whipped through midwicket by Rohit for a single. One more for Gill to end the over. Just two runs from it.
Dwarshuis continues. Gill gets a bottom edge as he looks to cut this and he is lucky not to chop this onto his stumps. Gill is finding to a little tough to get away. He plays this late to short third but finds the fielder. Four dot balls in a row as Gill tucks this straight to the mid-on fielder. A single for Gill at deep midwicket. DROPPED! Another reprieve for Rohit. He lifted this over extra-cover, and Marnus ran back from mid-off and dived to get to the ball but could not hold on to it.
Nathan Ellis from the other end. SIX! Rohit reads the length early and pulls over deep midwicket for a maximum. DROPPED! Slashed by Rohit and Connolly drops an easy one at point. Clipped off the toes by Rohit for a single at deep square-leg. Gill punches through cover for a single and gets off the mark.
Ben Dwarshuis to Rohit from over the wicket. FOUR! Down leg-side and flicked to the fine-leg boundary by Rohit with ease. Flicked over the infield by Rohit and thee runs for him as the ball plugs in the deep midwicket region. Good start for India.
Australia is first in getting to the centre. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill eventually make their way out.
Alex Carey and Steve Smith scored brilliant half-centuries to take Australia to 264. A tricky total with the holding off the surface. Won’t be an easy chase unless dew comes. Shami picked three wickets while Jadeja and Varun got two each.
India will need 265 runs to win.
Hardik. Singles off the first ball. OUT! Zampa is cleaned up off the third ball. Wanted to go for a slog and misses it.
Shami. Zampa slogs towards long on but the ball falls short of the fielder. Another chip towards long on, another single. SIX! Ellis slogs and goes over midwicket region. OUT! Ellis hits the ball straight to long on this time.
Hardik is back. Carey looks for a double and is run out!! A direct hit by Shreyas Iyer running from deep square leg region. He falls after scoring 61 off 57 balls. A big wicket for India.

Shami. Cutter, Zampa gets a leading edge towards mid off and steals a quick single. Carey ramps over short fine leg for four! Smart shot. OUT! Zampa has been given LBW. He has taken a review. A big inside edge, so umpire has to reverse his decision. Not out.
Varun. OUT! Dwarshuis slog sweeps straight to deep midwicket. A good breakthrough for India. He falls for 19 off 29 balls. A crucial 34-run stand broken.
Adam Zampa in at nine. He’s off the mark with a single.
Shami is back. He’s aiming for a yorker and so far has come good. Couple of yorkers and cutters in this over. Five singles in that over.
Varun. Four! Dwarshuis plays it very fine off the short third fielder. Played it late. Carey ramps over keeper and gets a double. Seven came in that over.
Kuldeep. SIX!! Dwarshuis is finally able to free his arms as he slog sweep the ball way over the deep midwicket region. 10 runs from the over.
Varun is back. He’s turning the ball away from left-handers. India has been able to control the scoring rate. Just three singles in that over.
Kuldeep is back. Plenty of googlies by Kuldeep and Dwarshuis isn’t able to rotate the strike. Just one run from the over.
Axar. Carey takes out the reverse sweep and the ball races away towards the boundary. Six runs from the over
Shami. That’s a very good over. Made use of the cutters to contain the batters. Just a single came from it.
Axar into the attack. Maxwell slog sweeps towards square leg for a SIX! OUT! Maxwell is gone the next ball. Axar pulled his length back, Maxwell went on the backfoot to pull but is cleaned up. Maxwell falls for seven off five balls.
Ben Dwarshuis at the crease. He’s off the mark with a single.
Shami. Back of the length, Smith clears leg and places the ball wide of mid on and gets two. OUT! Smith comes down the track and misses a full toss which crashes into the stumps. Smith falls after scoring 73 off 96 balls.
Glenn Maxwell at the crease. Four runs and a wicket in that over.
Hardik is back. Carey welcomes him with a pull towards midwicket for four! Ball is holding a bit on the pitch. Carey comes down the track and places the ball past mid off for four. Nine runs from the over.
Shami is back. Smith pulls and the ball goes JUST over the midwicket fielder; he gets two. Now he upper cuts but gets a single. Four runs off the over.
Kuldeep. Carey once again with that slog sweep and it goes for four. Full ball, tries to work the ball on the leg side and almost chips it to mid on. A lovely shot over cover for four by Carey. He’s batting beautifully.
Varun. In the slot and Carey sends it out of the park with a slog sweep. Sweetly timed shot and it went the distance. Eight runs off the over.
Kuldeep. Despite wickets, Australian batters have made sure to keep rotating strike. Five runs from that over.
Varun is back. He has been bowling quicker through the air. Just two singles came in that over.
Kuldeep. Carey is taken out his sweep. He sweeps fine and gets a four. Another six-run over for Australia.
Jadeja. Four! Carey goes over long off and ball gets two bounces before crossing the boundary. 150-up for Australia. Six runs from the over.
Kuldeep is back. Variations in the speed, keeping stumps in the play. A very good over, just two singles off it.
Jadeja. In the slot and Smith launches the ball over long off for a SIX! OUT! Inglis is gone. Length ball, ball slightly stopped on the surface and Inglis ends up chipping it straight to cover. He goes after scoring 11 off 12 balls.
Chakaravarthy. Short ball and Smith pulls the ball towards midwicket for four. This time a half-volley outside off, Smith drives towards cover, gets a double and completes his fifty. Eight runs from the over.
Jadeja to Inglis, one run to long on to start the over. Smith punches the third to long on off his backfoot, gets another run. Inglis square drives the fourth, Jadeja manages to get a hand to it but cannot save the single. Two more singles off the last two deliveries.
Varun back for his fourth over. Beats Inglis first up with a googly. A quick single to mid on, Virat covers this all the way from midwicket and make a throw, though wayward, at the striker’s end. Smith drives to long off for one. Inglis clips off his pads, one run. FOUR! Smith places his drive perfectly in the gap between cover and long off.
Jadeja to Marnus. FOUR! Another slog sweep from Marnus, gets it over midwicket. OUT! The third delivery skids on and pins Marnus on the front foot as he is trapped in his crease looking for a flick.

Josh Inglis at No. 5. Off the mark on his first delivery through long on. Smith drives to the left of sweeper cover for one. A single for Inglis on the last delivery. Seven runs and a wicket of this.
Shami back for his second spell. BEATEN! Marnus tries to late cut the first, misses it as the ball changes its line after pitching. He cuts the second to deep cover for a single. Smith looks for a big heave after coming down the wicket, ends up bludgeoning it into the ground. CHANCE! Smith drives in the air towards long off, it’s hit hard, Shami gets a hand in the way but cannot hold onto it. Smith fails to execute a ramp, half-hearted appeals from India but no DRS.
Jadeja for his fourth over. This one’s a maiden. There’s another tangle between the bowler and the non-striker. Smith with half a complaint to the umpire as Jadeja grabs onto Marnus as he stops a punch to long.
Axar to continue. Smith cuts the second delivery to deep covers for one. Marnus slices his slog sweep but it lands between deep midwicket and long on, two runs come off it. SIX! This slog sweep is off the middle of the blade and lands on the right side of the fence.
Umpire Illingworth has a long word with Jadeja about the taping on his left hand. He is asked to take it off before the start of his over. Smith steps out and chips over midwicket, gets two runs. Another couple on the third delivery through square leg. A drive to long off makes it five from the over.
Axar to Smith, drives to deep cover for one. Marnus flicks off his pads for another single. Smith punches the fourth to long off for one run. FOUR! Cheeky from Marnus. Gets low, waits for the ball to reach him and intentionally edges this past the keeper. A boundary after 50 balls.
Jadeja for his second over. Marnus plays four dots on the trot. The fifth is angling on his pads, whips it to long on for one. One run for Smith too through midwicket. It’s been 46 deliveries since the last boundary now.
Axar to Smith, whips the first delivery to deep square for one. Marnus gets a single behind square on the on side. Smith gets a long stride out to get to the pitch of the third ball, drives to long off for one. A quick single, Marnus drives to long on and Axar collides with Smith in trying to stop it from going past him, the speed is taken off the ball but that still allows the single. Axar needs some medical attention here after the collision. Smith punches the fifth to deep covers, one taken. Marnus’ push to long on makes it six singles off the over.
Ravindra Jadeja is the 4th spinner in attack now. Marnus picks this slightly shorter delivery to rock back and clip to deep square for two. CHANCE! Marnus looks for a late cut, nearly chops it onto his stumps, gets one to fine leg. A single to long on to end the over.
Axar for his third. Nearly a mixup, Smith flicks to short fine leg and wants a single, has to scamper back when Marnus refuses. The fielder fumbles which allows him the time to come back. CHANCE! The ball ricochets off Smith’s pad to the off stump but the bail does not come off. A maiden over.
Varun to Smith, drives to deep covers off his front foot, gets a single. Varun tries another yorker, ends up on full for Marnus, who takes a single with a drive to long on. One run for Smith, slashes this delivery way outside off.
Axar to continue. Smith shuffles deep into his crease to push this through covers, one. Marnus drives the fourth to deep covers for the second single of the over. Smith makes it three from the over with yet another single through covers.
Varun to Smith, one run to long on. Marnus waits in his crease for the second delivery, rolls his wrists over this to guide it to deep square from outside off. Varun tries to york Smith, certainly surprises him as it comes dipping in at his feet, but Smith is able to block it. A push to long on to finish.
Axar Patel into the attack. Smith drives the first to covers, no run. FOUR! Smith takes him on, gets to the pitch and heaves this over mid on. Smith tries another step-down heave, checks his shot at the last second and defends. A single to long off makes it five runs in the over.
Varun Chakaravarthy to bowl his first over. Smith drives the first to long off for one. WICKET! Varun does the trick. In Head’s slot at a good length, he takes the bait and cannot resist a hearty swing, toe-ends to Shubman Gill at long off. Rohit Sharma will take a long sigh of relief!

Marnus Labuschagne is the new batter. He gets off the mark with a single to long off. Smith clips to deep square leg for two runs. A run to long off to finish the over.
Kuldeep to Head, driven to covers, no run. SIX! Head comes down the wicket and lofts this into the sight screen. Kuldeep cramps Head for room on the next three, helping him get dots. The final is again angled into Head’s body, he tries to shuffle back and cut, gets an under edge.
A change of ends for Pandya. FOUR! Slightly short and Smith pulls this over square leg. Smith does not middle his straight drive, it hits the non-striker’s stumps and rolls to mid on, allowing a single. FOUR again! Head short-arm jabs this back-of-a-length ball, gets it wide of midwicket. He tries to run down the fifth to third man, hits it into the ground towards the keeper. A slower bouncer foxes Head but the umpire gives this wide. A single on the final delivery short fine leg.
Kuldeep Yadav into the attack now. Smith picks a single to long on off the first delivery. Head goes deep in his crease looking to cut this through the off side, hits straight towards cover. Head flicks the third through midwicket for one. Smith with a soft nudge to midwicket for another single. Head comes down the wicket and places the ball to deep midwicket, another single. Smith sends the final to long on for his third run.
Shami to Head, slightly wide, Head cuts to point. Head swings hard at the second, does not middle it but gets two through deep midwicket. FOUR! Short and wide and Head cuts this through covers. Head against Pandya now. Greets him with a bouncer, given a wide. The first legitimate delivery seams into Head, who cuts it but not through the gap. Head tries to make room on the second, the delivery follows him and he is forced to defend. Another wide, this one down leg. That’s the fifth extra in the innings already.
FOUR! Finally Head gets some leeway. This is overpitched and Head whacks this past mid off. SIX! On the pads and Head flicks this in his trademark fashion behind square. A risky single to point on the penultimate delivery, a direct hit from Ravindra Jadeja would have been his end. Smith defends his first delivery.
Shami to Connolly, swipes hard outside off, misses. Shami gets the second to seam in, Connolly tries to drive and misses again. A wide outside off, Shami will have to bowl that again. BEATEN! Pitches outside off and seams in, missing the edge by a whisker. Connolly drives outside off once more and once more he cannot connect. The fifth is slightly wider, Connolly cuts and misses.
Connolly misses the last ball too and India is convinced they have their man caught behind. A DRS is taken. There’s a spike on UltraEdge and Connolly’s horrid stay in the middle comes to an end.

Hardik Pandya to share the new ball with Shami. Head facing him. Pandya too starts with a wide down leg.
The next rises into Head’s midrif, he fends away from his body, managing to keep it short of the midwicket fielder. Head miscues a pull, rolls it along the ground to mid on. Head misses the pull altogether now, misreads the length and the pace and sees the ball go under his bat. Head blocks the fourth to covers. Head still cannot get a run, flicks the fifth but straight to midwicket. Dabs at the last one, gets it only as far as point. Just one run off the over.
Head on strike against Shami. Starts the over with a wide outside off.
PUT DOWN! Head closes the face early on his flick, gets a leading edge towards Shami, who gets his right hand to it but cannot hold it in.
Head drives the third through extra covers, Gill dives at mid off to keep it down to just one. Connolly defends his first delivery. The fifth is angled into Connolly, blocks it away to mid on. A swing and a miss to end the over.
It will be Cooper Connolly who will partner Travis Head at the top of the order. So, two southpaws to get Australia going.

The Indian captain has now lost the last 11 coin flips he’s been at the square for. The streak runs all the way back to the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia. Only Brian Lara has lost more coin flips.
For India, this was the 14th straight ODI where it lost the toss.
