Explained: Champions League suspension rules, When will the yellow cards expire?
The UEFA Champions League 2024-25 is heading into the round of 16 phase on Tuesday (IST).
The top 16 teams across Europe will fight it out over the two-legged tie to make place in the quarterfinals. However, all the teams have to be wary of potential suspensions.
Yellow and red card accumulations can become the difference makers for a teams’ continental ambitions.
Let us take a look at the UEFA’s rules:
In all UEFA club competitions, players and team officials are suspended for the next competition match after three yellow cards, that did not result in a red card, as well as after any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.).
As per the rule, a player or team official sent off by the referee is automatically suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition (i.e. UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League or UEFA Super Cup).
In the event of a serious offence, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment, including by extending it to other competitions.
All yellow cards expire on completion of the quarterfinals and are not carried forward to the semifinals.
