Launched in 2017, Khelo India promotes grassroots sports in India through Youth, University, Para, and Winter Games, fostering young athletic talent nationwide.
Khelo India is an initiative by the Indian government to revitalise sports at the grassroots level. It focuses on identifying and nurturing young talent while providing world-class training infrastructure.
There are four key events under the Khelo India movement:
– Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) – For school and junior athletes
– Khelo India University Games (KIUG) – For university-level athletes
– Khelo India Para Games (KIPG) – For para-athletes
– Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) – For winter sports enthusiasts
– 2018: First Khelo India School Games (renamed KIYG in 2019)
– 2020: First Khelo India University Games & Winter Games
– 2023: First Khelo India Para Games
Young talents are scouted through national and lower-level competitions. For university-level participation, the selection follows the World University Games criteria.
Athletes receive structured training through:
– Khelo India e-Khel Pathshala (Online training)
– Khelo India Centres & State Centres of Excellence
– Khelo India Accredited Academies
– KIYG 2024: 26 sports, including archery, athletics, boxing, hockey, weightlifting, and wrestling
– KIUG 2022: 20 sports, including badminton, judo, rugby, and taekwondo
– KIWG 2025: 6 winter sports like skiing and ice hockey
– KIPG 2023: 7 para sports, including powerlifting and cerebral palsy football
