“We have discussed names and got feedback from team members – Obviously it is a high pressure job, hope Gill will take it forward.”

At 25 years and 285 days, Shubman Gill will become the fifth youngest player to lead India on June 20 (first Test against Eng). Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi at 21 years and 77 days remains the youngest ever, while Sachin Tendulkar (23 years and 169 days) is the second youngest

“I don’t think he will be available for all five Test. Not sure if it’s three or four Tests. We’re just happy that he’s part of the squad”

On the No.4 spot: Ajit Agarkar says coach Gautam Gambhir and Shubman will take a call on that

Shubman Gill (C). Rishabh Pant (wk/vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav

Our correspondent Shayan Acharya says: The selection committee meeting is over. The BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, the convenor of the meeting, left the headquarters and the presser is expected to begin shortly.

Shubman Gill has captained just five matches in First-Class cricket. He has a solitary win, two draws and losses under his belt.

Gill’s batting stats in England:

Matches: 3

Innings: 6

Runs: 88

Avg: 14.66

BCCI on X: Honorary Secretary Mr Devajit Saikia and the Men’s Selection Committee is here to pick the team for the upcoming India’s tour to England.

Shubman Gill has emerged as the leading contender to captain India in the upcoming five-Test series against England. With Rohit Sharma announcing his retirement from Test cricket, there is growing momentum behind Gill — currently Rohit’s deputy in white-ball formats — to take over the reins.
