Liverpool parade attack — Car rams into crowd, several injured, driver detained
Liverpool’s victory parade turned tragic on Monday when a car rammed into fans during the Premier League club’s title celebrations.
Police in Liverpool said the driver was arrested and confirmed that multiple pedestrians were hit.
“We are currently dealing with reports of an RTC in Liverpool city centre. We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Mon 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male detained,” Merseyside Police said in a statement.
The incident followed a large celebration in the city centre, where tens of thousands of dancing, scarf-and-flag-waving fans braved wet weather to line the streets and watch Liverpool’s players display the Premier League trophy atop two buses bearing the words “Ours Again.”
“The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected. I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident,” said Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
“I’m being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate.”
