India loses to Iran 0-3, remains in contention for third-placed game in CAFA Nations Cup

Khalid Jamil suffered his first defeat as India coach after the Blue Tigers went down 0-3 to Asian powerhouse Iran at the Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan in a Group B CAFA Nations Cup match on Monday.

India made two changes to the starting XI from its 2-1 win over Tajikistan on Friday with Danish Farooq and Nikhil Prabhu coming in for Lallianzuala Chhangte and Jeakson Singh.

The Blue Tigers were resolute in defence against the world no. 20 for close to an hour before it conceded the opening goal in the 59th minute.

Amirhossen Hosseinzadeh bundled home the ball into the net after India failed to deal with a cross into the box. With India chasing the game, Iran added two goals in the death with Ali Alipour and Mehdi Taremi finding the net.

Iran has qualified for the final of the tournament, while India remains in contention for the third place game. India is second on the table with three points but its goal difference is now -2.

India’s final group game is against Afghanistan on Thursday.
