From Eriksen to Ziyech: Free agents still up for grabs after deadline day
The 2025-26 summer transfer window, for most of the major European leagues, came to a close on September 1, Monday. However, there still remains a lot of business left to be done. Outside of the transfer window, clubs can sign free agents — players who are not contracted with any club at the moment.
Sportstar takes a look at some of the notable names who could yet find a club in the ongoing 2025-26 season:
The Denmark international was released by Manchester United after his contract ran out at the end of the 2024-25 season. He had joined the Red Devils in 2022 on a free transfer.
Eriksen has reportedly attracted interest from Championship side Wrexham, but the 33-year-old midfielder remains without a club for now.
The French centre-back is another player who’s available as a free agent after he was released by West Ham United. Last season, he was on loan at Saudi Pro League club Al-Orobah.
Media reports have linked the Champions League winner with a move to Saudi Arabia, though no deal has materialised yet.
The 35-year-old midfielder is currently a free agent after a brief four-month stint with Iran’s Sepahan earlier this year. He previously spent five years at Monaco, though his career was interrupted by an eight-month spell out of action following a suspended two-year prison sentence for sexual assault.
The Moroccan midfielder last played for Al-Duhail SC in the Qatar Stars League but is currently without a club this transfer window.
The 32-year-old, who previously featured for Chelsea and Ajax, has also been left out of the national team’s upcoming World Cup Qualifiers due to a lack of game time, head coach Walid Regragui confirmed. Reports suggest Ziyech could be headed for a first stint in La Liga, while potential returns to Turkey or the Netherlands are also being considered.
The full-back joined Tottenham Hotspur from Real Madrid five years ago but spent most of his time at the club out on loan.
Most recently, he featured for Brentford before being released by Tottenham. Although the 28-year-old defender has been linked with Everton and West Ham, Reguilon is still without a club.
