I-League 2024-25 wrap: Delhi FC registers second win as Gokulam, Rajasthan play out goalless draw
While it was a good day to be a Delhi FC fan in the 2024-25 I-League, the supporters of Rajasthan United and Gokulam Kerala were left wanting for more.
Here’s what happened in the I-League 2024-25 on December 19:
Delhi FC recorded its second win of the season, a dominant 3-1 victory against Shillong Lajong in Round 6 at the Mahilpur Football Stadium. The scores were tied 1-1 at half-time.
With Mahilpur as its new home, Delhi got off to a good start as Vanlalhriatzuala (7’) put it in the lead, before Phrangki Buam (34’) reined things back to level terms for Lajong.
Stephane Binong (54’) and Himanshu Jangra (66’) scored two in the second half to win it for the host. Daniel Goncalves was given his marching orders in injury time after a second bookable offence.
Gokulam Kerala, it seems, has forgotten how to win.
After posting a 3-2 win against Sreenidi Deccan in its opening match of the I-League at Hyderabad — nearly a month ago — the team has struggled. The former champion had to settle for a goalless draw with Rajasthan United at the Corporation Stadium.
It is, of course, early days in the league, but the Gokulam men should not be too happy with the way things are going. This was their second goalless draw in a row; they had shared the points with Shillong Lajong away, five days ago.
They have just scored five goals from six matches. And this was the third successive match that they failed to score.
Gokulam now has seven points. Rajasthan also has seven points from six matches, but it has to do something about its poor goal difference (-8).
It was a tale of missed opportunities for both sides. Both created chances aplenty, but failed to convert them miserably.
For Rajasthan, captain Alain Oyarzun played his heart out, and his scorching free-kick in the 20th minute narrowly missed the target. Another Spanish player, Ignacio Abeledo also had a good game, as he created quite a few chances for Gokulam, but his teammates let him down.
