FC Goa vs Mohun Bagan SG Highlights, ISL 2024-25: FCG 2-1 MBSG; Brison double ends Mariners’ winning streak

That’s all! Manolo Marquez’s men, especially Brison Fernandes, notch up an important win to pose as a stumbling block to Mohun Bagan’s title defense.

A member of the Mohun Bagan staff is shown the red card by Crystal John.

A long wait for the Gaurs fans to hear the full-time whistle.

In the closing moments in the match, tackles are flying all around the pitch. The flow that was there about 10 minutes back is gone. Now, Goa would want to see the match off and get all three points. But, Mariners have a knack for pulling a rabbit out of their hat.

Liston and Rai come off as Anirudh Thapa and Ashique Kuruniyan come on.

Iker Guarrotxena and Udanta Singh come on for Yasir and Borja.

Manvir does well to play a ball into the box but Maclaren is inches away from diving and tapping the ball into the net.

Great ball in from Borja as Brison bends down and heads it into the net! Brison with a brace!

After Dimi’s goal, both sides are taking turns to creating chances.

Jason Cummings on for goalscorer Dimi Petratos.

We might see a change from Jose Molina soon.

Petratos doesn’t miss. Tiwari dives right but the shot is high, close to the top corner. Mariners equalise.

Sadiku dives in to defend but the ball strikes his hand. Crystal John points to the spot. Penalty for Mohun Bagan.

Dimi with the free-kick, it’s cleared by the defenders but Sahal, at the edge of the box, strikes it first time. But Tiwari is alert and thwarts the threat by making a crucial save.

Akash Sangwan brings a Mariner down, concedes a free-kick.

No changes from either coach as both teams start the second half.

That’s all from the first half in this match. Brison Fernandes’ strike, with a big help from Aldred, remains the difference between the two sides.

The India international runs down the right flank from the halfway line and wins a corner for his side. But, the corner-kick doesn’t end up in the back of the net.

FC Goa just had a chance to double the lead but Kaith was on his toes to punch the ball to safety.

Manvir whips in a ball towards Dimi Petratos, who was free. The Australian forward tries to guide the ball with his left-foot but the attempt goes above and beyond the crossbar.

Subasish Bose is being checked on by his side’s physio, same for Sandesh Jhingan. But it seems like they will continue in the half at least.

A ball comes in from a corner, Alberto Rodriguez rises and guides the ball towards goal with a header, but it is straight at Hrithik Tiwari, who collects it well.

The winger receives the ball at the outside of the box. There are a couple of teammates running up to his right but Yasir decides to go for it. He threads a shot through a crowd of white shirts but Kaith collects it comfortably. Drinks break now.

That is a good passage of play from the host. A great ball is floated in from outside the box by Yasir and it is Brison who’s at the end of it but this time, Kaith makes a comfortable save, collecting the ball.

A replay suggests that Aldred’s challenge on Borja was nasty, with the defender not getting any of the ball. But referee Crystal John doesn’t show much interest in that.

That looks nasty! Both Liston Colaco and Mohammad Yasir go for the ball but the former seems to push the latter without getting any of the ball. The Goan winger crashes down in front of his coach Manolo Marquez but the referee sees no foul play there. The match goes on.

The goal seems to be an aberration in the gameplay of the match so far. It is back to the teams not creating clear-cut chances and just lofting the ball, hoping their respective forwards will make the run and make something out of it.

Youngster Brison Fernandes tees up a shot after dribbling past Asish Rai and lets it fly. However, the attempt takes a huge deflection off of Tom Aldred and nestles into the empty net. Vishal Kaith is left watching the ball bulge the net as Goa takes the lead.

Sadiku tries for goal from the edge of the box but Apuia does well to close him down and block the attempt.

Both teams finding their feet now. But its the Mariners who are showing signs of threatening the Goan box.

The match is underway at the Fatorda stadium, with the FC Goa players in their orange threads and Mohun Bagan ones in whites.

Our reporter on the ground Neeladri Bhattacharjee with some visuals from the Fatorda stadium:

One of the most important aspects of Mohun Bagan’s consistency has been its available options when first-team regulars are injured.

Jamie Maclaren, its star signing this season, started an ISL game almost a month after the league started. In the three ISL matches before that, Dimitrios Petratos and Jason Cummings stepped up while the former became a No. 10 when Greg Stewart was sidelined.

“The problem for a coach is, when you sit on the bench, there’s nothing to do. That’s a problem, but it’s not the case in our team,” Molina quipped.

Mohun Bagan is without the services of Greg Stewart. Thapa will begin on the bench today. For Goa, Sandesh Jhingan and Co. will need to be cohesive to bring a high-on-momentum MBSG to its knees.

Christmas in Goa arrives a week ahead – houses lit with stars, incandescent lamps and Fir trees nestled in nooks and corners.

Manolo Marquez’s FC Goa will look to add the cherry on the cake as it hopes to humble table-topper Mohun Bagan Super Giant in its final Indian Super League (ISL) match of the year, at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Friday.
