Australia renames One-Day Cup to Dean Jones Trophy

Cricket Australia announced on Friday that its premier domestic One Day tournament, the One-Day Cup will be renamed to the Dean Jones Trophy.

Jones, who died of a heart attack in India in 2020 aged 59, was one of Australia’s greatest ODI players.

He scored 6,068 runs across 164 appearances in the format, which he was widely credited with revolutionising with his attacking approach.

The player of the tournament would receive the Michael Bevan Medal, named after another of the world’s finest one-day batters, CA added.

The Dean Jones trophy was unveiled on Friday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by Jones’ wife, Jane, and daughters Augusta and Phoebe.

CA Chief Executive Nick Hockley said Jones was an icon of the game.

“Dean Jones is an icon of the game and pioneer in one day cricket, who entertained fans around the world wherever he played,” Hockley said.

“He was a World Cup winner, an innovator and possessed one of the best records in 50-over cricket for the era that he played. We are delighted to acknowledge his legacy in perpetuity by naming our premier one-day domestic competition in his honour,” he added.
