Australia’s Max Purcell takes voluntary provisional suspension for use of ‘prohibited method’
Two-times Grand Slam doubles champion Max Purcell elected to take a voluntary provisional suspension under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said on Monday.
The ITIA said that Purcell had admitted to a breach of rules relating to the use of a “prohibited method” and requested to enter into a provisional suspension on December 10, which came into effect two days later.
“Time served under provisional suspension will be credited against any future sanction,” the ITIA said in a statement, without giving further details.
“During the provisional suspension, Purcell is prohibited from playing in, coaching at, or attending any tennis event authorised or sanctioned by the members of the ITIA (ATP, ITF, WTA, Tennis Australia, Fédération Française de Tennis, Wimbledon and USTA) or any national association,” it added.
Purcell won the U.S. Open in September with Jordan Thompson and won Wimbledon with Matthew Ebden, in 2022. He is currently ranked No. 12 in doubles.
He also finished as a runner-up in the Australian Open doubles final twice, in 2020 and 2022.
