Amorim’s successor at Sporting Lisbon sacked; Rui Borges appointed new manager
Sporting Lisbon sacked Ruben Amorim’s successor Joao Pereira within weeks of his appointment, the Portuguese top division side announced on Thursday.
Pereira had took over the reins of Sporting after Amorim took over as manager of Manchester United last month. However, the club lost the first three matches under Pereira before losing the top-spot in Portuguese top flight, following a goalless draw with Gil Vicente.
“João Pereira came in at a time that everyone knows about for an extremely difficult challenge. Unfortunately, we have come to the conclusion that it did not go well,” the club’s president Frederico Varandas told journalists after the decision was made official.
“The only thing I regret is not having been able to help João Pereira more. We wish João every happiness and we have no doubt that he will succeed due to his merit, skills and character,” he added.
