Premier League 2024-25: Guardiola says Manchester City ‘far away’ from winning title after Leicester City win
Despite marking his 500th game in-charge of Manchester City with a 2-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday, Pep Guardiola stressed that there’s “no chance” for his side to defend the Premier League title.
“We are far away from winning the Premier League. We accept there’s already no chance of that but we have other things to fight for,” Guardiola said after the match.
Guardiola’s out-of-form team won for the first time in five league games to climb to fifth in the points table, but is still way off leader Liverpool, which now has 14 and a game in hand over the reigning champion after Arne Slot’s side eased past West Ham United.
“Just relief, that is the word to express how all of us feel. We have done incredible things and now we struggle to win games so now it’s just relief,” the Spaniard said.
“We needed it. All of us. It was not the ideal performance but hopefully the victories will give our mood a better position.
“For the result we have to do something. If you don’t perform, the results won’t come. Now, in the position we are in, the results are the most important thing, to get points and help our minds. We have another game at home next and many good things happened today.”
“The players have given me a good present today, celebrating 500 games like this,” he said.
