AUS vs IND, 5th Test: What is India’s record at the Sydney Cricket Ground?

India will take on Australia in the fifth and final Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) starting Friday as it looks to finish the series on a high and secure a 2-2 draw.

However, India’s record in Sydney is not one which inspires confidence. India has played 13 times at the SCG and managed to win just once. Matches between India and Australia tend to finish in draws: seven out of 13 times the games have ended in a stalemate; Australia has won on other five instances.

India’s recent record at the SCG sticks to this trend, with its last three matches at the SCG all ending in draws. Their meeting in 2020-21 ended with honours even courtesy of a remarkable final day rearguard from Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant, Hanuma Vihari, and R Ashwin who all faced over 100 balls. Pujara also scored 193 in the 2018-19 SCG Test, which ended as a rain-curtailed draw.

The first Test between India and Australia at the SCG was in 1948 and was heavily hit by weather as it ended in a draw. India’s first and only Test victory in Sydney came in 1978 when Erapalli Prasanna took eight wickets in the match to register a victory by an innings and 2 runs.

Sachin Tendulkar has scored the most runs for India at the SCG, scoring 785 runs at a remarkable average of 157. Anil Kumble has taken the most wickets, with 20 at an average of 32.95. India’s highest score at the SCG is 705/7d, which came in 2004 as Tendulkar scored 241 and VVS Laxman 178.
