Disappointed to be overlooked: Vidit Gujrathi after Arjuna Award snub
Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi on Friday said he was disappointed after being snubbed for the Arjuna Award again.
“This has been the case for years, and I never spoke about it, but I hoped 2024 would finally be the breakthrough,” wrote Vidit on social media platform X formerly known as Twitter.
Vidit was part of the Indian team that won gold at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary. He also emerged victorious in the 2023 Grand Swiss Chess tournament and qualified for the 2024 Candidates tournament.
In the Hangzhou Asian Games, he won silver in the men’s team event along with D. Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, Pentala Harikrishna and R. Praggnanandhaa.
“Disappointed, yes—but I’ll brush it off and focus on what’s in my control. I’m deeply grateful for everything I’ve received—it’s far more than the 6-year-old boy who just learned chess could have ever imagined. As President Kennedy said: Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country,” concluded Vidit.
