Premier League 2024/25: Mateta scores late equaliser as Crystal Palace salvages point against Chelsea

Premier League 2024/25: Mateta scores late equaliser as Crystal Palace salvages point against Chelsea

Crystal Palace scored a late equaliser to leave Chelsea winless in four Premier League games as Jean-Philippe Mateta struck in the 82nd minute to cancel out Cole Palmer’s first-half opener.

Chelsea had chances to seal the win before Mateta picked up a ball from Eberechi Eze and blasted home from close range to ease Palace’s relegation worries.

Palmer had given the visitors a deserved lead in the 14th minute when he fired in an angled shot after fine work on the left by winger Jadon Sancho, who dummied his marker on the halfway line to sprint free and set up the England forward.

The draw left Chelsea in fourth place, one point ahead of in-form Newcastle United, which sits just outside the Champions League spots in fifth.

Crystal Palace is 15th, six points ahead of Ipswich Town, which is in the highest of the three relegation positions and travels to Fulham on Sunday.

Substitute David Brooks’s superb volley secured a deserved victory for hosts Bournemouth as it defeated a poor Everton 1-0 in their Premier League fixture at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

Bournemouth had found Everton tough to break down before Brooks showed excellent technique to volley Milos Kerkez’s cross into the net from 10 metres and give his side the lead on 77 minutes.

Everton created little in the contest and failed to muster a shot on goal as its scoring woes this season continued and the spectre of relegation remains a major concern.

Bournemouth is in seventh place in the table with 33 points from 20 matches, while Everton has 17 points from 19 games and lies in 16th, two points above the relegation zone.
