WATCH | Kohli teases Sydney crowd with ‘Sandpaper Gate’ gesture after Steve Smith’s wicket
India’s acting captain Virat Kohli teased the crowd over the infamous ‘Sandpaper Gate’ scandal after Australia’s Steve Smith fell one run short of reaching 10,000 Test runs during the third day of the fifth Test in Sydney on Sunday.
Just one short of the milestone, Smith edged a delivery from Prasidh Krishna and was caught at gully by Yashasvi Jaiswal. He will be only the fourth Australian batter to manage the haul.
After the wicket, Kohli, stationed in the slip cordon, turned to the crowd and pulled out his empty pockets.
Smith was stripped off his captaincy and banned from international cricket for 12 months along with David Warner for ball tampering during a match against South Africa in 2018. Cameron Bancroft too was banned for nine months. The trio was caught using a sandpaper to shine the ball.
The wicket of the former Australia captain left the side 58 for three in its chase of 162 runs, keeping the visiting India within reach of a victory.
