AIFF plans to increase foreign player quota in Indian Women’s League
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is considering the possibilities of increasing the quota of foreign players in the Indian Women’s League, President Kalyan Chaubey announced on Thursday.
While the inaugural season of the IWL didn’t feature foreign players, it was in the second campaign between 2017 and 2018 that foreigners were allowed for the first time. Back then, only two were allowed in the matchday squad while only one could be included in the starting line-up.
The quota was increased in the 2022-23 season when the AIFF allowed teams to have a maximum of three foreigners, with two allowed on the pitch at a time. This was also maintained last season.
The 2024-25 season of the country’s top-tier of women’s football will commence on January 10 with defending champion Odisha FC playing East Bengal at the Kalinga Stadium.
