High Court rejects TFAPA’s petition to ban film reviews for first 3 days of a movie’s release

The Madras High Court on Tuesday rejected a petition filed by Tamil Film Active Producers Association (TFAPA), to ban movie reviews for the first three days of the film’s release. TFAPA’s petition claiming that negative reviews often lead to the failure of movies, comes in lieu of criticisms faced by Indian 2 (Kamal Haasan), Vettaiyan (Rajinikanth), and Kanguva (Suriya) this year.

The Madras HC has however refused to prohibit movie reviews, while noting that the producers can always file a police complaint against reviewers, in the event of defamatory or derogatory remarks.

Justice S. Sounthar hearing TFAPA’s writ petition filed through its counsel Vijayan Subramanian, has also directed the Tamil Nadu state government’s Information Technology and Digital Services Department, the Union government’s Information and Broadcasting Ministry, to come up with a response within four weeks for regulating movie reviews on social media platforms like the Google owned online video sharing platform YouTube, Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, and the Elon Musk owned X (formerly Twitter).
