Visakha Organic Mela to showcase an array of organic products from December 12-15
The 5th edition of the Visakha Organic Mela is set to bring sustainability and organic living into the limelight. Scheduled from December 12 to 15 at the AU Engineering Grounds in Visakhapatnam, the event promises to be an enriching experience for enthusiasts of eco-friendly lifestyles and organic farming. With over 200 stalls by farmers, farmer producer organizations, and organic stores, the exhibition is an endeavour to provide a direction towards healthier, sustainable living.
A highlight of this year’s mela is the special session on terrace gardening on December 15. Gardening groups from Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Anakapalle, and Vizianagaram will share their expertise during this session. A model terrace garden will be on display to inspire attendees, showcasing practical ideas for transforming urban spaces into lush green havens. In addition to this, awards will be presented to the best terrace gardener from each district, recognizing their dedication to greening their surroundings.
The mela aims to recreate the charm of rural life with traditional village-themed decor. One of the standout attractions will be a live demonstration of ganugu, a traditional oil expeller used in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh for cold-pressed oils. “This will give a glimpse into our heritage practices, offering a hands-on understanding of traditional oil extraction methods,” says Usha Raju, one of the members of the organising committee. Another section will feature home businesses selling, hand-spun fabric, sarees, pickles and home-made snacks.
Plant lovers can explore a variety of nurseries at the mela, featuring everything from flowering plants to medicinal herbs. A separate counter for organic food products is being planned. Entrepreneurs and business enterprises interested to display and sell organic food products can reach out to the organising committee of the mela.
Visitors are encouraged to bring their own cloth bags to carry their purchases. The mela will be on from 10am to 8pm from December 12 to 15.
