UEFA Champions League 2024-25: Mendy out for Real Madrid against Atalanta after thigh injury

Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy will miss the Champions League clash against Atalanta after suffering a thigh injury, the club confirmed on Sunday.

The injury happened during Madrid’s La Liga clash against Girona, where the former clinched a 3-0 victory. Mendy came off hurt in the second-half.

“Following tests carried out on Ferland Mendy today by Real Madrid’s medical department, the player has been diagnosed with a muscular injury to his right quadriceps,” said Madrid in a statement.

The club refused to comment on how long the French international would be unavailable, but Spanish media reported he is likely to be sidelined for several weeks.

Madrid, currently 24th in the UCL, is fighting for survival after three defeats in their opening five games.

Mendy is also set to miss La Liga games against Rayo Vallecano and Sevilla, as well as the Intercontinental Cup final on December 18.

Jude Bellingham also suffered a knock in the clash with Girona, but coach Carlo Ancelotti said the Englishman would be “available” for the Atalanta game.

Brazilian attackers Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo are expected to return for Real Madrid for the Atalanta clash, but Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, Eduardo Camavinga and David Alaba are still out injured.
