Ruben Amorim praises Manchester United’s fighting spirit in League Cup defeat to Tottenham

Manager Ruben Amorim focused on the positives from Manchester United’s fightback in Thursday’s 4-3 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup quarterfinals, stating that his team was undone by the host’s more clinical finishing.

United fell 3-0 behind shortly after the break but scored twice within seven minutes to revive its hopes. Despite maintaining pressure, it conceded again when Son Heung-min scored a fourth for the host.

“We lost focus at the beginning of the second half; it was a tough period for us, about 10 minutes. Then we regained our composure, and I think we performed really well,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “If you look at the whole game, I believe we were the better team, but they were more clinical. We lost the game, but the fight and spirit from the lads were really important to me.”

“Overall, it was a good match, but there’s no satisfaction in losing. We didn’t win, so we need to focus on the next game.”

Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November, acknowledged that his team has a long way to go before it can compete for the Premier League title.

“We’re improving as a team… our goal is to win the Premier League. How long will it take? I don’t know, but that is our ambition,” he added.

United will host sixth-placed Bournemouth on Sunday.
