Highest Grossing Films in Tamil Nadu 2024

Highest Grossing Films in Tamil Nadu 2024

Unlike 2023, Tamil movies did not dominate Tamil Nadu theaters in terms of box office collections this year. The first half of 2024 was largely disappointing, with several highly anticipated films failing to make a mark, and faltering at the box-office within a week of release. Fortunately, the second half turned out to be significantly better.

2024 saw a notable influx of Tamil dubbed films performing exceptionally well at the state box-office. Movies like Pushpa 2: The Rule (Rs. 72 Cr), Manjummel Boys (Rs. 65 Cr), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (Rs. 36 Cr), Kalki 2898 AD (Rs. 43 Cr), and Lucky Bhaskar (Rs. 17 Cr) minted impressive collections in Tamil Nadu.

Kollywood’s very own smaller productions like Lubber Pandhu, Vaazhai, Lover also did exceptionally well at the Tamil Nadu box office, finding success with the audiences in 2024.

Key Performances

1. Vijay/ The Greatest of All Time:

The Greatest Of All Time grossed Rs. 214 Cr in Tamil Nadu, according to MovieCrow’s estimates collected from various sources, thus securing the top spot. Despite mixed reviews for its content, the movie rode high on Vijay’s stardom, and the emotional connection fans shared, since it was one of Vijay’s last two films before his political entry. The buzz around this factor helped The GOAT achieve significant box office mileage.

Actor Vijay’s Ghilli (2004) re-release also grossed Rs. 25 Cr, a number that some 2024 films couldn’t achieve even with notable stars in them.

2. Sivakarthikeyan/Amaran:

Amaran was a major surprise at the box office, grossing over Rs. 160 Cr, a number typically associated with top-tier stars in Tamil Nadu. Sivakarthikeyan hit the bullseye with this film, as it enjoyed excellent footfalls across all centers.

Sivakarthikeyan’s other release Ayalaan, had a decent run as well adding to his successful year.

3. Rajinikanth/ Vettaiyan:

While Vettaiyan grossed a respectable Rs. 106 Cr in Tamil Nadu, its box office pull didn’t match the magic of Jailer (2023). This was a slight disappointment for exhibitors. Nevertheless, it secured the third spot in the top grossers of 2024.

Rajinikanth’s Lal Salaam, a film he shouldered with an extended cameo, failed to create an impact at the box office collecting less than Rs. 20 Cr. However the re-release of the Superstar classic Thalapathi (1991), grossed Rs. 2 Cr, and was considered a decent hit.

Notable Hits: Films like Lubber Pandhu (Rs. 43 Cr), Vaazhai (Rs. 34 Cr), Aavesham, Lucky Bhaskar, Lover (Rs. 10 Cr), Singapore Saloon, Vadakkupatti Ramasamyand Demonte Colony 2 (Rs. 36 Cr) delivered decent returns. and were well-received by audiences.
