ISL 2024/25: Chennaiyin boss Coyle provides update about Elsinho’s injury, says Brazilian will return to India in January

Chennaiyin FC manager Owen Coyle on Friday provided a positive update regarding Brazilian midfielder Elsinho, who suffered a serious head injury during an Indian Super League (ISL) fixture earlier this month.

On December 11 against Hyderabad FC, Elsinho clashed with his teammate P Laldinpuia while contesting for a header and hit the ground hard. He had to be rushed off the field in an ambulance. After the match, Chennaiyin FC released a statement on X confirming that the Brazilian had regained consciousness.

Speaking ahead of Chennaiyin’s match against Bengaluru FC on December 28, Coyle confirmed that the midfielder is currently in Brazil, and is expected to return to India by January, following which he would be assessed again.

He said, “He had some follow-up scans in Brazil which have shown everything at the moment, God-willing, in a good place, which is great news for Elsinho. He will continue with his family, and return early January with us.

“From then, we’ll assess it again, we’ll get him another check-up from there, and hopefully, first and foremost his health is most important, everything is ok and he will start to continue his progress from there.”

The Brazilian has been in the ISL for the last two seasons, initially joining Jamshedpur FC for the 2023/24 season, before moving to Chennaiyin this summer. He has made a total of 34 appearances in the ISL (including 12 this season) and scored a goal.
