ISL 2024/25: Defensively sound Mumbai City FC hosts vivacious NorthEast United in top-six clash

Coming on the back of a come-from-behind victory against Hyderabad FC, a high-flying NorthEast United will be hoping to maintain the momentum when it faces Mumbai City FC in an Indian Super League fixture at the Mumbai Football Arena on Monday.

Mumbai City FC, which defeated Chennaiyin FC in its previous game, is placed fifth on the points table, just ahead of NorthEast United. However, a win on the road could see the touring team jump above the Mumbai outfit and Odisha FC.

NorthEast United is the highest-scoring side in the tournament, with 26 goals, and ahead of a crucial game, coach Juan Pedro Benali expects his team to play as per plan. “Every game is totally different, the approach is totally different. Mumbai City FC is a different team, with different players. But it always depends on us. If we do our job, stick to our game plan, elevate the quality and fighting spirit, we will do a good job,” Benali said.

However, it won’t be an easy task. So far, Mumbai City FC has maintained clean sheets in its last four matches – winning three – and another similar feat will see the side equal its longest such streak in the tournament for the first time since November 2014.

While it will bank on its solid defence, NorthEast has a contrasting scenario as its defenders have been inconsistent, thus conceding six goals in the last five outings. Despite enjoying an upper-hand, Mumbai coach Petr Kratky is cautious and believes in eliminating the chances for the opponents.
