Liverpool suffers injury blow as defender Gomez picks up hamstring injury during West Ham clash
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez will be out of action for ‘a while’ after he picked up a hamstring injury during the Premier League clash against West Ham United on Sunday.
Gomez started the match, which ended in a 5-0 win for the Reds, but was substituted in the first half by English youngster Jarell Quansah when the defender looked to be struggling to continue.
“You saw today an injury of Joe Gomez. If a player says he wants to stop, he has to be changed,” Liverpool manager Arne Slot told Sky Sports.
“In a sprint, then we all know it’s a hamstring and we all know it’s going take a while before he is back. I don’t know how long but he will be out for quite a bit.”
The 27-year-old England international’s injury will add further problems for the Premier League leader, which is already without centre-back Ibrahima Konate with injury.
Having moved from Charlton Athletic in 2015, Gomez has played 240 times for Liverpool and rose up the ranks to become a trusted general at the back under former manager Jurgen Klopp. In the current season, he has played in half of Liverpool’s matches in the league, starting in six of them.
Liverpool has been in red-hot form under new manager Slot this season, enjoying an eight-point lead at the top with a game in hand.
It hosts Manchester United in its next game and will look to inflict another blow to its arch-rival which is tottering at 14th in the standings, with three consecutive losses.
