A year to forget for MUFC: What are the forgettable records Manchester United set in 2024?

Manchester United ended 2024 on a forgettable note when it suffered yet another defeat at home, losing 0-2 to Newcastle United on Monday.

It was the fourth consecutive defeat for the Red Devils and the sixth in their last seven matches, a form that prompted manager Ruben Amorim to consider relegation as a possibility. Though United won the FA Cup, the sky has remained grey at the club for most part of the year with a change in managers and marred with inconsistency.

“I think (relegation) is a possibility and we have to be clear with our fans. We have to change something but this season will be really hard on everybody. It can make us stronger and we have to fight,” Amorim said.

Sportstar looks at all the records that United broke this season – ones that it will look to forget before starting 2025:

United conceded 18 goals in all competitions in December, its joint-most in a single month since March 1964.

It lost six games in December – most in a single month since September 1930 (7).

United became the first side in the Premier League era to lose five matches in all competitions in consecutive months of December, losing five games in both December 2023 and December 2024.

Amorim’s side spent Christmas Day at 13th, its lowest position on December 25 since it was 15th in 1986 under new manager Alex Ferguson.

Excluding penalties, United conceded 19 goals from set pieces in the Premier League in 2024; the most in a single calendar year in the competition.

The Red Devils showed Erik ten Hag the door after a poor run in September, which comprised a 0-3 drubbing to Liverpool and a loss to Tottenham Hotspur with the same margin.

Only David Moyes (32.4 per cent, 11/34) lost a higher percentage of his Premier League games as United manager than Erik ten Hag (31.8 per cent, 27/85).

After Tottenham’s 3-0 win, United lost more Premier League matches by three or more goals since Ferguson left the club (23 in 424 games) than they did in 1,035 league games under the Scot (22).

With eight points (W2 D2 L3), United recorded its lowest tally in its first seven games of a league season since 1989-90 (7), when it went on to finish 13th under Ferguson – his lowest league finish in charge of the club.

United lost the FA Community Shield to arch-rival Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola’s side avenging the FA Cup final loss. With the defeat, United finished as the runner-up 10 times in the Charity/Community Shield, more than any other side in the competition’s history.
