Financial Fair Play to limit winter transfer window of Manchester United, confirms Amorim
Manchester United will have an uphill battle to change the existing squad, having limited options due to financial fair play rules, Ruben Amorim, its manager said on Monday.
“We don’t have that possibility in January if we don’t take some players [out],” Amorim said. “You know the situation better than me. It is not that I am arriving here and know I can spend money changing the team.”
The Red Devils are struggling for form under new manager Amorim and lost 0-2 to Newcastle United, its fourth consecutive game in all competitions. The loss in the Premier League kept them 14th in the standings, with the manager not ruling relegation out this season.
To turn the tide though, the Portuguese manager will have limited options, especially at a time when the club suffered a loss off over 113 million pounds in the previous financial year.
The Premier League side is going through tough times financially, with new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe cutting down costs as much as possible to smoothen the operations.
In such a scenario, the possible options for Amorim would be to identify players the club could sell to make way for incomings, with Marcus Rashford the potential first one on the list. The England international was kept out of the matchday squad in United’s four of five previous games and also did not come on against the Magpies.
United has 22 points from 19 matches and will hope to find its rhythm before its too late. The loss against Newcastle left the club at the lowest position at the turn of a year in the league since 1989.
