Nayanthara Beyond The Fairytale: After Dhanush, Chandramukhi makers demand Rs 5 Cr. in copyright!

Nayanthara Beyond The Fairytale: After Dhanush, Chandramukhi makers demand Rs 5 Cr. in copyright!

Documentary film Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale has been streaming on the Netflix OTT platform since November 18, 2024. By Nayanthara’s own admission, actor Dhanush sent her and husband Vignesh Shivan a legal notice demanding Rs. 10 Cr. in damages for using behind-the-scenes footage from the sets of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan (2015), a few days before Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale‘s release.

Team Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan argued that the BTS footage was individual property shot on their personal devices, and BTS wasn’t part of Intellectual Property or Copyright contract 10 years ago in Tamil Cinema. Needless to say, the incident turned out to be one ugly legal feud among Dhanush, Nayanthara, and the Netflix streaming platform.

Now, another Tamil film producer has seemingly objected to the use of his film’s footage in Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale without proper permission. Reports are rife that Sivaji Prorductions that had produced Chandramukhi (2005), has demanded Rs. 5 Cr. in compensation from Netflix and Nayanthara for using Chandramukhi clips.

It is worth mentioning here that back in November, 2024, post the digital premiere of Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale, the actress had taken to her Instagram account to thank Sivaji Productions, among 18 production houses for their ‘magnanimity’ in letting her using film footages for free. It remains to be seen how Nayanthara, Vignesh Shivan and Netflix handle the piling legal issues for their docu film.
