Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Bumrah getting Khawaja out “probably my fault”, says Konstas

Sam Konstas felt ‘probably’ it was his fault when a riled-up Jasprit Bumrah got Usman Khawaja out during the Sydney Test.

Konstas was involved in a heated exchange with India’s lead bowler, Bumrah, in the last over of the first day of the final and final Test. And when Bumrah ended up dismissing Khawaja two balls later that incident, the entire Indian team gave the 19-year-old an aggressive glare.

“I didn’t get too fazed. Unfortunately, Uzi got out. He was trying to buy some time a little bit. It was probably my fault, but it happens. It’s cricket. Credit to Bumrah. He got the wicket, but obviously great performance from the team,” Konstas, who made his debut in the fourth Test in Melbourne, said.

In both the Tests, Konstas was constantly on the face of the visiting Indians and the first one to break was Virat Kohli, who ended up shoulder-barging the then debutant and coping a 20% fine.

“Don’t know. Whatever’s on the field, I just try to do my best and I guess I got a few nerves on the other team,” he said.

Konstas scored 60 off 65 balls in his debut innings during which he took on Bumrah, carting him for 34 runs in 33 balls. On his overall experience, the opener reflected by saying: “It’s been quite special. Obviously, Mark Taylor presenting my bag and to top it off with the win today was outstanding from the team,” he said talking to Triple M cricket.

When asked he was feeling nervous before his debut during the Boxing Day Test, he said: “No, I was very calm. I was talking to my parents and all my teammates. Obviously, it was a packed stadium (MCG), Uzi said I was pumped up while batting but I didn’t feel anything. It was a good debut and glad to get two wins.”

The new year’s Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, also known as the Pink Test in order to raise awareness about breast cancer. Glenn McGrath, the former Australian cricketer, lost his wife, Jane, to the disease. Following her diagnosis, McGrath founded the McGrath Foundation in 2005.

Konstas too shares a personal connect with the event as he talked about his cousin and grandfather battle with the disease. “It’s a special, the McGrath Foundation, and hopefully we spread more awareness for cancer, get the funds in, because I remember my cousin passed away with Leukemia and the grandpa with bowel cancer. So hopefully we hope we spread awareness and get the cure,” Konstas said.
