Women’s Soorma Hockey Club coach Jude Menezes said that his focus has been zeroed in on nurturing the U-21 local players on his side in an attempt to bring them into the fold along with seasoned players like co-captains Salima Tete, Savita Punia and Dutch sensation Maria Verschoor.
“Every team has eight foreign players so we are trying our best to bring the whole group together and we were working on training set pieces, so these are exciting times because there are four U-21 players as well so bringing them together has been the focus,” Jude told PTI Videos on the sidelines of their training session in Chandigarh on Wednesday.
Jude, who was a former Indian goalkeeper also hopes that the inaugural edition of the women’s Hockey India League will take the Indian Premier League’s route in inspiring more athletes.
“Hopefully, this league goes in the direction of IPL because this league will inspire aspiring girls to be like Savita or Salima so hopefully this will be the motivation and it will provide opportunities for more hockey players,” he signed off.
