ISL 2024-25: Mohun Bagan Super Giant seeks to continue dominant record against East Bengal
Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) would look to assert its dominance over arch-rival East Bengal in the Indian Super League (ISL) when they face each other in Guwahati on Saturday.
The fixture was shifted out of Kolkata, after the Bidhannagar Police, under whose jurisdiction the original match venue Salta Lake Stadium falls, cited concerns over inadequate security because of the Gangasagar Mela from January 10 to 18.
The Mariners, who lead the league table, will look to extend their dominant record over East Bengal, having won eight out of the nine encounters between the two teams in ISL history.
MBSG head coach Jose Molina played down his side’s impressive track record against East Bengal in the ISL.
“We need to perform well tomorrow. What we did in the ISL so far doesn’t matter in tomorrow’s game. We need to perform well, defeat them in the 90 minutes tomorrow on the pitch, We need to optimise our resources” he said.
East Bengal though comes into the derby in patchy form, registering two wins in its last five games, which has seen it placed at the 11th place in the points table.
But, East Bengal FC head coach Oscar Bruzon opted to provide an optimistic front going into the crunch game.
“We have to optimise the resources that are available to us and we have full confidence in the players who will take the field to play in the Kolkata Derby,” he said.
